Week 3: From Convenience to Consistency
What does it mean to live a life of consistency? We see all sorts of practical touch points that theoretically demonstrate its value – how we eat, how we develop skills, etc. – but the question has never been whether consistency works, but rather how we can move from a life built around convenience to a life built on consistency. Does consistency add value to our spiritual lives, and if so, how so? Or, is consistency a byproduct of a healthy relationship with God? The answer, of course, is yes! Daniel, a man who demonstrated a spiritually consistent life over decades of exile, endured many trials through spiritual routines ‘doing as he had done before’. What do we need to know as people who aim to practice a consistent faith? Embracing the reality that it isn’t easy and rarely provides instant results is possible when we set it against the hope of living in the blessing of God’s victory for us. Consistency allows us to discover God’s goodness in surprising places and helps us understand more deeply who God is. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to start with the little things in our life, day after day, that lead to greater fruitfulness and faithfulness?
- Luke 4:16; Luke 22:39; Acts 17:2; Acts 2:42
1. Can you recall a season in your life when consistency really paid off for you?
Conversely, can you recall a season when this was missing and you really whiffed on something? What happened? What did you learn from it?
2. Can you think through some of the virtues that come from a consistent life? And, having discussed them, discuss why it might be so difficult for people to grab hold of something that seems so obvious?
3. Daniel was ‘getting up there’ in age at the time of Daniel 6 (Scholars think he was in his 80’s!). Does that change how we think about the story and the trajectory of Daniel’s life, about what consistency looks like, and how that might encourage or
challenge us?
- Extra Challenge: Take some time to look through Daniel 1-5, how does examining his earlier life fill in how/why Daniel lived the way he did?
- a. If your group is stuck, try out passages like
- i. Ephesians 4:17-24
- ii. Colossians 3:1-10
- iii. 1 Peter 4:1-11
- iv. Romans 6:1-14
- v. Hebrews 3:12-13
- vi. Titus 3:1-7
- vii. 2 Corinthians 6:4-7
